Projects: DIY swimsuit

To continue a theme, let’s talk about swimsuits!

Swimsuit shopping is the worst.  Why not cut out the middle man and make your own?

These videos from Threadbanger.com should get you started nicely.  All you need is the old clothing that’s probably cluttering up the back of your closet at this very moment.

all you need is a t-shirt or two

Board shorts!

I think the board shorts idea is really cool and unique, though I wonder how a pair of suit pants will feel when wet.  Probably very heavy.  And I would highly recommend inserting some kind of padded liner (found at your local fabric store or joanns.com) to the bikini top pattern.  You know, for modesty’s sake.

Let me know how they turn out!

It’s summertime; suit up.

It’s bathing suit time again.

Not the most exciting time of the year for most of us, but if bathing suit styles were still like the ones in this video I might be able to muster some form of anticipation.

what style they have!

I think you can get pretty close with the items I’ve gathered here.

So bathing suit time can be fun after all.  To the beach!

The Mantelpiece: Part II

Today was another day spent scraping old paint off a mantelpiece I’m refinishing.

At some point in this mantelpiece’s history someone got the idea to paint it mint green.  Well, not “paint” so much as “glop on as much green paint as thickly as possible, especially in every crevasse and carving of which there are many.”  So I’m tired.

But the hard part is done!  Soon I will proudly display my finished mantelpiece in my apartment and on here, but in the meantime here are some ideas to inspire.

That last one is a picture of a mantelpiece-as-headboard!  I’m going to tuck that idea away for later…

Discovery: LABELSTONE

I want to share with you some scenes from my very own kitchen.

kitchen

It’s a brief glimpse, but I think you get the point.

I like to decorate my kitchen with vintage food ads and pictures.

So you can imagine my delight upon discovering LABELSTONE!

This shop specializes in vintage shipping crate labels and magnets.  I could cover an awful lot of blank space with what they have here!

I guess I should get decorating…

The Charleston

Everyone should know how to do the Charleston.

That is a firm belief of mine.  It’s a dance that will never go out of style, partly because of nostalgia, but mostly because it’s just too much fun!

It’s a fun intro followed by a quick how-to! Enjoy the music!

Sure, the feet do the main part of the work, but your whole body gets involved in this dance!

Look how much fun they’re having!

Come on, when you hear that music don’t you just want to start moving and shaking anyway?  Now you have a place to start!

Twin Peaks: Weird and Lovely

I recently began watching the David Lynch classic Twin Peaks.

I must admit, I had been avoiding this show.  When I heard that it was something Mr. Lynch had made I automatically assumed I wouldn’t enjoy it.  His works may be considered to be great shakes by the art film world, but I’ve never been able to appreciate them.

You can imagine my surprise, then, at how much I am genuinely enjoying this series.

It’s just the right blend of creepy and pretty that keeps me coming back for more.

It was the saddle shoes that inspired me to create this one.  Anyone else a fan of this show?  Tell me, please, but no spoilers!

The Mantel Piece

I do not have much to say tonight because I am so tired.  Why is that, you ask? Because I have spent the entire day re-finishing an old mantel piece that I plan on putting in my apartment.

More on that later, unfortunately, because I’m still not quite finished, and I don’t want to tell you about it until it’s done.

As soon as it is set up, though, I want to cover that mantel with beautiful items, like the ceramic creations from Mudstuffing Original on Etsy.com.

That ceramic gumball machine is just too cool.

With items like these, you too can have the prettiest faux fireplace on the block!  More to come later, I promise!

Summer lovely

It’s time for those lazy days of summer.

The time when everyone gets loose.  Floppy hats and flowing dresses are the uniform of the season.
Summer time

Tank tops and cotton ballet flats, too; everything designed to keep you cool and collected during the oppressively hot days of summer.

My favorite version of this song.

Listen to Ella, and keep the livin’ easy this summer.
